New York – The Refinery Rooftop

NYC ROOFTOP BAR, ALFRESCO DINING

The last time we reviewed New York, we spoke of the love we have for Williamsburg, Brooklyn and that it was the best place from which to view Manhattan.

The last time we reviewed New York, we spoke of the love we have for Williamsburg, Brooklyn and that it was the best place from which to view Manhattan. We still stand by that comment, but it’s now time to talk about the best place to see Manhattan from within midtown. With that comes to mind our favourite eatery, with a great view of the Empire State Building.

Cocktails in NYC, Mojitos & Guacamole

In Manhattan, our normal pitstop is the Refinery Rooftop at the Refinery Hotel, located on West 38th Street. Not the tallest spot in town, but one with great character and ambiance. Unlike most of the places around, the Refinery is fairy priced and has some great options for lunch. Booking is necessary for a table, so it’s worth planning ahead. However if you are looking for a spot to drink, the bar accepts walk-ins and bar-side dining. It may sometimes feel like bars around Manhattan are a bit too upscale for lunchtime dining, but the Refinery is a lot more rustic and has a great outdoor lounge feel. The restaurant and bar have a retractable roof which helps with the occasional rainy days, and a terrace with a great unobstructed view of the Empire State Building.

Grilled fish tacos (with spicy lime mayo, poblano, slaw, chilis along with fries)

The Refinery may not have an extensive menu, but they have everything from salads to burgers. The concept is fusion American food. It makes for an ideal lunch before hitting the town or heading back to work. We opted for the market green salad with fish tacos and a side of guacamole. The food is well prepared and even during peak hours, you’ll find the food comes at a reasonable pace with no drop in quality. The best thing about the food, in our opinion, was the taste. Overall, the food was well-seasoned and the salad was hearty as well as having a great blend of textures. An added bonus to the Refinery are the staff, as they are both welcoming and courteous, making it an enjoyable place to hang out or dine.

Market Greens (carrot miso dressing, roasted carrots, avocado, pickled radish, seeds, ricotta salata with shrimp)

Overall, if you find yourself in midtown Manhattan and fancy an enjoyable place to have an ale or good grub, head to the Refinery. Heads up: after 5pm, don’t be alarmed if you if you find yourself queuing on the street, as we aren’t the only ones who know about this place!

Great Views – Amazing views from the bar looking onto the terrace and the backdrop of the Empire State Building.
